Perth - Jonathan Hallett

Jonathan Hallett

Jonathan Hallett is an active, community-minded Perth resident who provides a fresh and integrated perspective on local issues. Currently completing a PhD in Public Health and working in tertiary education, his previous experience working in the community and health sectors has given him insight into the crucial role these play in improving social equity and community well-being.

Jonathan is dedicated to building safe and inclusive local communities through sustainable planning and technological innovation while embracing cultural diversity. He will work hard to maintain a fair and equitable society that ensures all Western Australians benefit from the resources boom while protecting our natural environment for future generations.

Jonathan wants inner city and urban development that incorporates ecological principles and is oriented towards enhancing social connection. This includes funding the expansion and improvement of public transport systems, including the introduction of an urban light rail system to reduce car reliance and congestion.

Jonathan is committed to improving funding and support for the preventative health sector to improve the health and wellbeing of our community. There is overwhelming evidence of policies and programs that will do much to prevent cancer, heart disease and diabetes yet the state government spends less than 2% of the health budget on preventative health.

Despite the resources boom, there has been no increase in the preventative health budget of the state government. Under the previous health commissioner there was even a reduction. We need a firm commitment that a percentage of the budget will be locked into provision of preventative health measures to reduce the toll of premature death and disease on Western Australians.

Jonathan would also like to see increased government support for the community sector with improvements in pay and working conditions with parity to equivalent roles within the government sector and funding to build service delivery capacity. He wants a comprehensive approach to dealing with the crisis in housing affordability, including an increase in the proportion of public and community housing developments, greater support for homelessness services and emergency accommodation to meet the current demands, and enhancing tenant rights and consumer protection in the rental market.
